When a storm rolls through, it doesn't take much to tear shingles right off a roof. Wind gets under the edges, pulls them up, and suddenly you've got exposed decking and felt paper sitting in the open with nothing protecting it. That's exactly what happened here.

Here's the thing about black felt paper - it was never meant to be the last line of defense. It absorbs heat, it isn't breathable, and it breaks down fast when it's left exposed to the elements. It's an underlayment, not a finish product. The moment shingles go missing and that felt is visible, the clock starts ticking on water infiltration and decking damage.

We've seen what happens when this kind of damage gets ignored. Water finds a way in. Then you're not just dealing with a roof repair - you're dealing with rotted decking, damaged insulation, and potentially ceiling damage inside the home. What starts as a few missing shingles becomes a much bigger job.

The fix here isn't complicated, but it does need to happen fast. Proper shingle replacement means matching the existing material, nailing it down correctly, and making sure the surrounding shingles are still seated tight. Anything less and you're just putting a bandage on it.

If you've had any wind or storm activity lately, it's worth taking a close look at your roof - or having someone do it for you. Damage like this isn't always obvious from the ground until it's already caused problems inside. Catching it early is always the better outcome.
