Sun Tunnel Installation Brings Natural Light to a Dark Stairway

A lot of homes have that one spot - a hallway, a stairwell, a bathroom - that just never gets enough light. You flip the switch every single time you walk through, even in the middle of the day. That's exactly the kind of problem a sun tunnel solves, and it's something we install as part of our roofing work.

Here's how it works. We cut a clean circular opening through the roof deck, set the dome cap on top with a properly flashed metal base, and run a highly reflective metal tube straight down through the attic space. That tube channels daylight from the roof all the way to a diffuser lens mounted flush in the ceiling below. No electrical. No wiring. Just natural light, all day long.

The install requires real roofing knowledge to do right. The flashing around the dome has to be tight - same as any roof penetration. We lay the surrounding shingles back in correctly, use quality underlayment, and make sure everything is sealed against water intrusion. A sun tunnel that leaks defeats the whole purpose, so we treat it with the same care we'd give any roof repair.

What you end up with is a stairwell or hallway that's completely lit up without touching a light switch. The difference is pretty striking.
